Matt’s Week in Dork! (7/3-7/10)

While I got some movie watching in, and it was an oddly busy week for me, it wasn’t an especially good week in Dorkness.  Most of my movie watching was on the 4th, when I didn’t have any functions to attend, and threw myself a little party, thankful for a day of downtime.  And so, the movies…

Double Indemnity:  Fred MacMurray turns in a surprisingly lively performance as severely corruptible man who meets the wrong kind of woman.  One of the classic Film Noir movies, it involves insurance fraud, murder, sex and all sorts of dirty deeds.  Good stuff.  I love that MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck are not especially attractive leads, but that works for the reality of it, even with the stylized visuals.  And Edward G. Robinson is typically charming as he shifts from leading roles to supporting performances.

Lost Highway:  Hands down my favorite David Lynch film, everything is just spot on here.  Great characters, great performances, two tons of crazy, excellent sound track, and more questions than you can shake a stick at.  Don’t ask me to explain it.  Why does Frank become Pete?  How?  I don’t know.  What’s the deal with Alice, or is it Renee (“Are both of them you?”)?  Who is the Mystery Man?  I know, we’ve met before…at my house.  Some shocking violence, uncomfortable and somewhat creepy sex, back stabbing, murder, and super-nuts jazz sax.  Don’t tailgate.  Don’t murder your wife in a fit of jealous rage.  Do not talk to pale guys with no eyebrows.  And above all, don’t get mixed up with the scary blond trophy wife of a porn producing gangster.  And never stay at the Lost Highway Hotel.

Black Panther:  This animated series had a lot of potential, but generally didn’t live up.  Awkwardly tied to the rest of the Marvel Universe, it never seems to give a good sense of the world it inhabits.  I’d have rather the writers spent more time on life in Wakanda and the adventures of the Black Panther than on the ‘evil white man’ stories.  The animation style is interesting, but weird, looking kind of like a motion comic.  I’d really like to see this get a better treatment.  The Panther is a cool character and I think could make a really awesome animated hero.  Maybe one day it’ll get a better take.

Dr. Black and Mr. Hyde:  Very low budget, and not really especially good, this movie is made surprisingly entertaining by an excellent cast, especially the always awesome Bernie Casey.  For whatever reason, the mix of horror and Blaxploitation never really worked.  Like Blacula and others, this is worth watching, but not a particularly good film.

The Right Stuff:  THE epic of the American Space Race, The Right Stuff features a fantastic cast of actors playing an amazing group of people.  Pioneers of the future, they were also just people doing their jobs.  Crazy though those jobs may have been.  Filled with humor, daring do, thrills, tears and joy, the movie is a grand and beautiful vision.  More than worthy of its status as a film classic, it should be seen.  An inspiration.

Starcrossed:  A cute, if completely forgettable movie about an alien woman and a doofy young man and the romance that buds between them.  There’s not much to recommend it.  But if you enjoy very, very 80s films or the performances of a young James Spader, then check this one out.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold: Season One-Part Two:  More of that particular 60s fueled DC madness that is The Brave and the Bold, if you love the madcap, Adam West type, crazy comic book stories, this is a must.  Great villains, great heroes, and some super-zany antics.  From space to the bottom of the sea, and everywhere else, Batman sees it all, and then some.

The God Who Wasn’t There:  The interview subjects, especially Sam Harris, are interesting, but this is not a very good ‘documentary.’  It’s more of a polemic against his Christian upbringing.  I certainly agree with much of what he says, and he brings up some interesting points.  But you only get maybe 10 minutes of anything worth your time.  And most of that you can see if you look up Sam Harris on YouTube.

TrollHunter:  What is up with those crazy Scandinavians?  They sure do make interesting movies.  From Rare Exports to Dead Snow, they’re taking chances and making magic.  TrollHunter is the best ‘found footage’ movie I’ve seen to this point.  Good characters, fun story, great dark humor.  It’s not as cool as Rare Exports, but it’s a sure fire cult hit.

American Experience: Riding the Rails:  A fascinating, but perhaps too brief, look at a particular group of people at a very particular time in America’s history.  Those young people who climbed up on train cars and rode from one part of the country to another, living a strange, free, dangerous life filled with adventure and suffering.  I was impressed by the excellent interviewees, each an amazing storyteller in their own right.  This is a must for someone interested in the time period.  The little glimpses into the lives of such different people, all driven by chaotic times, are sometimes painful, sometimes wistful, but often tinged with a sort of subtle danger.

Watchmen:  I don’t care what the purists, say, this adaptation of the classic graphic novel is frickin’ amazing.  Grand in scope, gorgeous in execution, it is grim, violent, and ugly.  But it’s also sad, wondrous, and strangely uplifting.  Broken heroes, heroic villains, pathetic shells of former glory.  It’s packed with great characters, great quotes, and amazing action sequences.  And yes, the end of the graphic novel has been altered. However, I think the new ending perfectly fits with the story, and has an effect quite similar to the original.  Not for the feint of heart, if you’re willing to take the challenge, this film is plenty rewarding.

Gamer:  The Crank Boys take on Rollerball-type dystopian films in this extremely frenetic and bleak action film.  Extreme sports and ‘reality’ TV, along with internet anonymity are mainlined into your brain.  It’s brutal and nasty.  And it certainly takes a grim view of our disconnected voyeuristic society.  The movie has less humor than the Crank films, and feels more angry.  But, perhaps that’s good for the subject matter.  Great cast.  Excellent action.  But not for everyone.

I got in a few episodes of Stingray and watched the first disk (of three) of the old British miniseries, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.  So far, to good.  But the plot hasn’t really taken off yet.  Hopefully have that finished by the next Week in Dork.

I grabbed the fourth volume of the Hellboy Library Edition series, but won’t be reading that right off.  In fact, I got very little reading of any kind done this week.  I got some biking in, but wasn’t feeling well, so didn’t enjoy it as much as I should have.

On the music front, I’m checking out Lykke Li.  So far, I’m digging it, but haven’t had a lot of time to listen.  And then, after hearing Grieg’s Hall of the Mountain King during the credits for TrollHunter, I got the hankering for some Scandinavian orchestral music, so I started listening to some Grieg and Nielsen.  Great stuff.

Matt’s Week in Dork! (6/26-7/2)

It’s been a busy and very weird week.  Honestly, the last few weeks have been kind of crappy for this Dork, but with plenty of silver lining.  Up first, the films of the week.

Megamind:  Clever, occasionally cute, and a good deal of fun, Megamind isn’t amazing, but it’s worth a watch.  The voice work is good.  It plays well with big comic book myths, especially the Superman type.  And I kind of like it’s meditation on the need of an adversary to define oneself.  Check it out.

Doctor Who Revenge of the Cybermen:  The long awaited return of the Cybermen has the Doctor and Sarah Jane facing some troubling military types in the future, and some creepy, big headed aliens.  There’s a lot going on in this story, but it pretty quickly comes down to battling the Doctor’s other major enemy.  Not as iconic as the Daleks, they’re still pretty cool.

Eastern Promises:  The Russian mob is up to no good in London and a local nurse learns more than is good for her.  Meanwhile, upwardly mobile thug Viggo Mortensen is ‘just driver.’  It’s a really good flick, and Viggo is pretty awesome.  And yes, that crazy bathhouse fight is pretty hardcore.  I hope Viggo and Cronenberg keep working together for years to come.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon:  The girl is less awful than Megan Fox.  I didn’t notice any especially offensive ethnic stereotype robots.  And there are a couple cool stunts/shots.  Otherwise, this is more of the same generic crap.  Soulless, mindless pap from a purveyor of mediocrity.  A true heir to the thrown of James Cameron, Bay makes big, loud, and ultimately dumb films, and his best ideas are lifted from much better films.  And sadly, like a latter day Cameron, his movies lack a charm that would make you forgive their obvious shortcomings.  Like the previous films, I found the visual assault of CG to be a sort of sensory overload, making it hard to follow the action.  Half the time, I couldn’t tell what was flying debris and what was robot.  And in spite of being WAY over long, the movie felt spotty, like important scenes were left on the cutting room floor.  It’s a step up from Revenge of the Fallen in the same way Revenge of the Sith was a step up from Attack of the Clones.  Better than a steaming turd does not equal good.

Don't know what you're looking at?  Neither did I.

Aquamarine:  Why did I watch this?  I honestly don’t know.  It’s pretty annoying, screechy, and pointless.  The leads are all mostly unlikable and the story pretty lame.  It’s not surprising that this film came and went with little fanfare or lasting interest.

Making Splash look good.

Doctor Who: Planet of Evil:  A pretty good horror story set on a planet near the edge of the universe, this owes a great deal to one of my favorite movies, Forbidden Planet.  Some great sets and excellent guest actors keep it grounded while the Doctor faces off with another universe.

Wait Until Dark:  After working pretty consistently since 1951, this 1967 film marked the beginning of a near ten year hiatus from film for star Audrey Hepburn.  Had it been her final film, it would have been a pretty good exit.  Tense, scary, and brimming with great performances from a very small but very talented cast.  Especially cool are the charming small-time hood Richard Crenna and the cold psycho Alan Arkin.  It plays like an attempt at a Hitchcock film, and while not to the level of Hitch’s best, it’s still quite good.  And I suspect that this movie informed a young Brian De Palma quite a bit, as I actually had to check to make sure he wasn’t in some way associated with it.

I also watched a few episodes of the 70s kids’ show Space Academy, which is fun, but not very good.  So far, of that batch of TV series (Jason of Star Command, Ark II, and some others), Space Academy is the lesser.  But oddly enough, Jonathan Harris isn’t that bad.  Usually I can’t stand that guy, but he’s OK here.

Also watched a little more Batman: The Brave and the Bold.  Dang that show is nutty.  Good stuff, though.

Outside of watching some movies, I went with some friends to a local bar.  This is not my usual way to spend time and money, but I’m trying to do more new things.  The whole situation was a bit surreal.  After a long day at work, my roommate and I took a bus, with the intention of switching to another bus that would go right by the bar we were heading to.  After missing the intended first bus, we walked a little out of our way and got a second option.  OK, all’s well.  But ten minutes later, while waiting at a light, the loud motor behind us started to get louder.  Then it started making an awful sound, like the screaming of a thousand souls at the gates of hell.  And that’s when the smoke started.  Then the sound died, but the smoke kept up.  After the light finally turned green (dang but that intersection is poorly set up and timed), we got off at the next stop and got out of Dodge.  Blah.  After a good walk in the sun, which was actually fairly pleasant, we arrived at the bar, or pub, I can never tell.  A couple rum & Cokes later and we were on our way.  I just don’t get the bar atmosphere.  I never have.  I’ve been to a number of very different bars over the years, and I’ve always felt like an outsider.  At any moment, someone is going to ask me about the ‘big game’ or some such thing, and I’m gonna be like a spy in East Germany who doesn’t  have his papers.  Unable to answer and hoping for a quick death.  The actual bar itself seems set up to keep you from socializing, putting you all in a line like some feeding trough or cafeteria table.  But venturing out to the tables feels like you’re looking for trouble.  The crowd was a calm group of business types, with one group of Barbie Doll type college girls and a semi-butch lesbian couple.  Upon leaving, I said something thoroughly inappropriate, which someone interpreted as me being drunk.  But that’s just my sense of humor.  Another walk in the sun and we were home.   I keep wanting to expand my social circles and experience, but as much as everyone seems to sing their praises, I just don’t think bars are the place for me.  Even mellow ones where the pop-collar douche bags are absent.

On the music front, I’m still enjoying quirky female vocalists.  This week, I’ve been especially in to St. Vincent.  And I’m finally giving Florence and the Machine a more serious try.

I read the next volume of the Conan comic series.  And I finally finished Reality is Broken.  Excellent book.  I’ll be writing up something more about it in the coming days.  In the meantime, go out and get a copy.  Read it.

Really getting a hankering to do some more gaming, too.  Though I’ve got a specific idea for my next go round, what comes later is still up in the air.  A few options have been swirling around my noggin.  The standard option is to try to get a weekly or biweekly game with a regular crew of about 4 people.  It’s a nice option and can work very well.  But the reality of adult life can make this difficult.  Kids, jobs, and all sorts of other demands can make a regular game night very difficult.  But there are other options.   Maybe an Ars Magica campaign with a crew of 4 to 10 players, who can come or not without effecting the progress of the game.  I’ve seen it work before.  Or, simply playing various games every couple weeks.  Maybe some board games one night, and a one-shot RPG on another.  We’ll see.

Duran Duran and David Lynch?

You ever see something that just looked completely out of place, though clearly deliberately put there, and wonder what chain of events must have happened for you to witness it?

Well, that's how I felt today when I started reading about David Lynch directing a Duran Duran concert video.

Look, the 80s were pretty important to me, and in a lot of ways, the music was a soundtrack of my youth, but I never much cared for Duran Duran.  Oh, sure, now I can rock out to them on a Best of the 80s compilation, but the were never really my bag.  I liked that Rio video, 'cause there was a cute girl running around.  But otherwise...Meh.

I'm on a boat!

However, David Lynch is one of my favorite directors.  No, I'm not one of those snotty, turtleneck wearing punks who claims to 'get' Lynch.  I just enjoy his work, as I really think he wants it enjoyed.  I watch it.  I'm not gonna sit around and debate the deeper meaning of that knocked over clock in the background, because there probably isn't any.  It was there.  It looked good.  Lynch kept it.  That really seems to be how he works.  And any meaning we find in the film comes largely from what we bring to the table when we watch it.

And, yeah, I'll watch whatever he does.  I don't always love it.  Inland Empire is an epic of surreal film making, but not something I'm gonna just pop in and enjoy for a night.

But now, I just want to know the series of events that unfolded, putting David Lynch in the director's chair for a Duran Duran concert.  Don't know if I'll ever find out.  So, here's a sample...
