Dork Art: Drew Struzan For Mondo!
Over on their blog today, Mondo announced some pretty damn exciting news. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has started archiving the great work of Justin Ishmael and Mondo, guaranteeing that their insta-classic interpretations of cinema will have their rightful place in history. A snippit from the press release, "This ongoing gift from the Alamo Drafthouse will be housed along with the Herrick’s existing collection of more than 38,000 movie posters. The posters in the library’s collection are stored in climate-controlled vaults, and are scanned and entered into the library’s online catalog, where they can be viewed by the public." Yes, very cool.
However, even more fantastic than that bit of insanity is that Mondo and famed cinematic illustrator Drew Struzan (Indiana Jones! Big Trouble in Little China!) have teamed up and produced the above screenprint for 1931's Frankenstein! And it is absolutely stunning if you ask me. And, yes, it's probably going to be one of the tougher (probably gonna throw money at ebay) prints to score. No word yet on price or release date, but I'll keep ya posted.

Dork Art: Drew Struzan's Cowboys & Aliens
After all the hubbub about the Struzanesque Super 8 poster, it looks like director Jon Favreau did manage to drag Struzan out of grumpy retirement for this potential poster. Daniel Craig recently tweeted the above image along with a retweeked/titled version and even though the floating heads are kinda meh-ish I still can't help but get taken away by the Struzan style. The man himself told Comic Book Movie that "not using my work seems to have become the true mark of what I do. They didn’t use my Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth… likely will not use my Cowboys and Aliens." But who knows, fingers crossed, maybe this image will find itself somewhere in the marketing campaign.

Dork Art: Super 8
UPDATE: This is not Drew Struzan. He is still staying far away from Hollywood.
Finally, we have a poster for the upcoming Spielberg spankfest Super 8 that actually elicits some sort of excitement from this cold, pessimistic fanboy's heart. After Paramount opening the mystery box to critics, I've read nothing but good things about JJ Abrams' new Kid Hero Sci-Fi tale and it's really good to see this Drew Struzan art poster. Cuz if you're really going to evoke the joys of Spielberg's Indiana Jones or The Goonies than you gotta go with Drew.
